About This Workshop
Humor Writers, Get In Here! How To Write And Publish Short Humor.
“Great mix of practical advice, illustrative example readings and realistic exercises. Loads of food for thought! I particularly appreciated the lesson on voice - so critical for making writing come across as humorous and yet so often left undiscussed!”
Are you ready to write humor that’s infused with your weird musings and your unique comedic sensibilities?
Are you ready to write jokes so tight and witticisms so crackling that your readers’ heads will lightly explode in a very fun way?
Are you ready to include a third funny thing in your list of three funny things?
Hey there, humor writers and aspiring humor writers. I’m Alex Baia, and I’m proud to teach your June workshop: Humor Writers, Get In Here! How To Write And Publish Short Humor.
Aside from publishing dozens of humor pieces in various publications, I’m also an editor of the humor pub Slackjaw. As a writer and editor, I’ve learned a lot about what makes humor tick. And I want to pass that knowledge on to you.
The pieces we’re learning here are the ones you might read in publications such as The New Yorker’s “Shouts and Murmurs,” McSweeney’s, Points In Case, Slackjaw, and other literary and comedic pubs.
Now, I will be brutally honest with you: Humor writing is hard. Not impossible, but hard. However, it can be easier with the right process and feedback. In this workshop, I will teach you that process. In fact, this workshop will demystify humor writing.
Curriculum:
Get the vibe - Lesson 1 is Free
You Will Learn:
The core principles of the humor piece (that you should follow 95% of the time).
How to get noticed by editors and published in humor sites.
To efficiently vet good humor ideas so that you don’t waste your time.
The common blunders that undermine your written humor and prevent it from being published. And how to avoid these blunders like a boss.
Editing techniques to sharpen up your pieces and take them from “meh” to actually funny.
How to use peer feedback and iterative writing to your advantage.
And more!
You will leave this workshop with one to two finished humor drafts—assuming you do the work!
