Community Question Time: Who's Your Writing Wannabe?
The Forever Workshop Community Corner — 4.9.25
Ok, ok, ok, this was originally going to be “who’s your writing crush?” but that felt a little bit too confessional, so let’s keep things classy and focus on our CRAFT instead. (And if your answer also happens to be your crush then, well, so be it.)
So. Here’s our Community Corner discussion this week:
If you could write like ANYONE, who would it be?
What is it about this author’s writing style / voice / approach / characters / body of work that you love so much?
and….
Are there any similarities between your beloved ‘wannabe’ and your own writing?
Of course, your answer may well be: “I don’t want to write like anyone else, I want to write like me!” — which is probably the overarching lesson here — but there’s also plenty to learn from our influences, our inspiration, and analysing the process of other artists whose work we admire.
So if you can’t think of anyone you’d like to emulate, tell us how you’d like to develop your writing further, and what you’re proud of within your own craft!
P.S. If you haven’t already taken a look, my very own workshop, Take it from Shakespeare, just kicked off at The Forever Workshop — in which I show you how to borrow from Shakespearean rhythm, imagery and rhetoric, and cultivate a bold disregard for the literary rules… Hope to see you there (and here) throughout April!
Elizabeth Strout, Amor Towles, Robertson Davies ... reading each of them is such a joy. Having a fraction of their talent and perception would be unimaginably satisfying.
I want my writing to be unique but I love the simplicity and the tone of simpler times, humility and love of mother earth in Mary Oliver's writing. ❤️
